Swedish automaker Volvo will introduce a successor to the XC90 mid-size luxury crossover SUV in late 2014.
The all-new Volvo XC90, slated to be the first vehicle launched by the company as part of China's Geely Holding Group, will be developed on a new large luxury platform that's in the works as we speak. Codenamed SPA, the new platform can accommodate a variety of powertrains, including Volvo's new plug-in hybrid system, and will underpin the successor to the S80 sedan as well.
Unhappy with the second-generation XC90's delay, Volvo wants to commence production of the new mid-size SUV in late 2014. "What we have learned about the XC90 is that you have to be very careful when delaying product development, you are borrowing money from the future and you have to pay it back with interest," Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said in Geneva. "It was not very smart to delay that program."
The Volvo XC90 was introduced in 2003 and was the company's best selling model worldwide in 2005, with 85,994 units sold. In 2012, Volvo delivered only 31,290 examples of its flagship SUV.
