Caterham have used engines from a variety of manufacturers, since the company came into being, in 1973. They used Lotus, Cosworth, Rover and, most recently, Ford engines - they are now even testing a Seven, equipped with Ford’s latest 1.0-liter EcoBoost unit.
However, with the recent tie-up with Renault now officially confirmed, it is possible that future models will use engines sourced from the French manufacturer’s very wide array of powerplants. The news was confirmed by Mike Gascoyne, Chief Technical Officer at Caterham. Furthermore, future models may also be developed with the aid of Renault, as Gascoyne points out by saying: “You don’t enter a joint venture without hoping to work together.

The boss of Caterham, Graham MacDonald, still admits that they may will still use Ford-sourced units, for the time being: “At the moment we're committed to the Sigma and Duratec engines. They have a lifetime in our product plans and they deliver what we want in terms of characteristics and keeping the costs where we want them. But they do have a finite life and who knows after that? If Renault can do that then clearly the relationship is there.
