With the spotlight usually on its German rivals from BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-AMG, we often forget that Cadillac makes a highly-power premium subcompact car. It’s called the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, and it is the range-topping variant of the series.
Gunning for the likes of the BMW M2 Coupe, Audi RS 3 Sedan, and Mercedes-AMG CLA 45, this punchy four-door sedan blew two candles off its birthday cake a few months back. It builds on the success of the normal CT4-V, and it has some things in common with its predecessor, like the twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6.
However, only the displacement is identical, as the mill doesn't carry over without any upgrades. The GM-owned premium car brand's engineers revised the crankshaft counterweights, gave it an improved air intake, titanium-aluminide turbo wheels, new software, and a few other bits and bobs.
Due to all the work that went into it, it develops 472 hp (479 ps/352 kW) and 445 lb-ft (603 Nm) of torque. This gives it a significant advantage over its rivals, which are less powerful, allowing it to hit 60 mph (97 kph) in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 189 miles an hour (304 kph). In fact, the CT4-V Blackwing's output and thrust can be compared to that of the standard BMW M3.
A good-old stick shift with six gears is standard, and interested parties can get a self-shifting ten-speed transmission as an option. The model has an electronic limited-slip rear differential, suspension that mirrors the configuration of the CT5-V Blackwing, and high-performance brakes with Brembo calipers. Echoing the sporty dynamics is an equally fun-to-look-at exterior design and several enhancements made to the cockpit. Stuff such as microfiber headliner, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats with massaging functions, and others are included.
Curious why we're dedicating an entire story to a car that's a little over two years old? If you paid attention to the title, you know the reason is a rendering. It came via a.c.g_design on Instagram, imagining this fun-to-drive premium subcompact sedan with an entirely new face.
The CGI makeover is controversial, as it gets revised lighting with two vertical LED strips on each cluster instead of one, which protrude into the bumper. The latter has smaller side vents and an equally large central air intake. Still decorated by the corporate logo, the grille has become taller, and if anything, we think it looks better with this enlarged part. We don't stand behind the new headlamps or the shape of the side vents. Black side mirror caps were added, and it retains the stock wheels, albeit with a darker hue.
Elsewhere, it looks the same, and it would've been interesting to see a digital refresh of the back end, too. But this is where the rendering artist drew the line. So, what's your take on it?
