BMW X1 Production Starts in Leipzig

BMW yesterday started production of the long-awaited X1 at the Leipzig plant in Germany, with European stores projected to receive the model in a few weeks. However, the car will be officially introduced on October 24 and will also attend the Frankfurt Auto Show this month. According to a report by, the X1 is quite attractive even before the public debut as the parent company received lots of pre-orders for this particular model.

The German carmaker said the Leipzig plant is building 730 vehicles per day while running at full capacity, with approximately 75 of them being the new X1. But even so, BMW plans to boost production of the X1 by the end of the year to 300 units per day.

The car will be offered in six engine choices, as it follows: xDrive28i, xDrive23d, xDrive20d, sDrive20d, xDrive18d and sDrive18d. The most powerful unit, fitted on the xDrive28i, is a six-cylinder, 258 hp gasoline unit. It can reach sixty in 6.8 seconds and tops at a speed of 205 km/h (127 mph - 230 km/h or 143 mph with optional high-speed set-up).

All drivetrains available on the X1 make full use of BMW's latest, including the already familiar EfficientDynamics: Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start Stop and a gearshift point indicator.

Standard safety features include three-point inertia-reel seat belts all round, frontal and side airbags as well as head airbags at the side, adaptive Brake Lights and daytime driving lights. Optionally, customers may choose Xenon headlights, Adaptive Headlights and a High-Beam Assistant.
