With Mercedes-Benz and Audi selling entry-level cars by the thousands in the US, most analysts predicted that BMW would soon lose the crown in the luxury segment on the North American continent.
However, recent sales showed that the Bavarian manufacturer is still holding on to the number one spot, even though the difference between it and its followers is getting slimmer.

This August was one of the most prolific for the auto industry in the US. Almost 1.6 million light vehicles, crossovers and big pick-ups were sold in the last month, 6 percent more than last year. It might seem like a small increase but you should keep in mind that sales went up 17 percent in August 2013.

Some brands showed growth of up to 20 percent, like Chrysler or 15 percent in the case of Nissan. Of course, others recorded drops, like MINI with a 16.9 percent slowdown but American manufacturers as well, like GM, for example, that showed a 1 percent decrease.

In the luxury segment, though, BMW is doing well, leading the race with a grand total of 211,005 so far but it’s only around 5,000 units ahead of Mercedes-Benz that is catching up with its CLA-Class models that are extremely popular at the moment.

The third place goes to Lexus at the moment, with 7,063 units behind Mercedes-Benz. On the other hand, Audi seems to be catching up, overtaking Cadillac with 116,066 units against 114,008 and Acura that is even further back with 105,918 cars sold so far this year.
