BMW is currently on track to achieve an ambitious goal set a while back, part of the ONE strategy the company adopted. This year, their only purpose seems to be reaching that 2 million cars sold. However, while the Bavarians have their sights set on this objective, their competitors are also looking for more in terms of sales.
Over the last month, the Munich-based company posted a decent sales increase, managing to sell 8 percent more cars than in the same month of 2013. Audi, on the other hand, the company that has been breathing down BMW’s neck for the last few years in terms of sales, posted even better results.
Looking over the numbers, the white and blue roundel company sold 139,399 units in the seventh month of the year while the four-ringed one sold 144,000. This is the third month this year when Audi managed to outsell BMW. Most of this is due to the popularity of the new models launched (like the Audi A3 sedan) that are cheaper than usual and have a great deal of appeal for new buyers.
On the year-to-date basis, Audi is now just 12,397 cars behind BMW that managed to sell 1.03 million vehicles this far. It’s a small difference that has been shrinking for the last few years. Just in 2013, the two companies had 21,035 units between then.
In terms of percentages, Mercedes posted the biggest growth of them all, its sales growing by 11 percent in July helped by the surge in demand for the new S-Class and GLA-Class. In total, the Swabians sold 130,003 cars in July.
For BMW the biggest challenge is the drop in demand in Europe and USA. Taken as a whole, the EU is the biggest market for the Germans, on a global scale and, while China’s demand keeps in rising, it can’t match the downfall recorded by the other two markets.
For example, Audi’s sales grew by 7 percent in Europe and 13 percent in the US. At the same time, BMW posted a 2 percent growth back home and just 9.8 percent in the US.
