There you are, minding your own business, driving to work when all of a sudden giant monsters come out and try to eat you. Fortunately, you're in a Subaru Forester with symmetrical all-wheel drive and paddle shifters behind the steering wheel!
That's basically the idea behind one of the strangest and most interesting car commercials we've seen in year. But peal back the layers of this Japanese onion and you find there's a really cool story behind this.

Attack on Titan, or Shingeki no Kyojin if you want to be all Japanese about it, is the hit anime in Japan right now and is catching on with Western internet surfers as well. So far, they've finished a complete series of 25 episodes based on the work of manga artist and author ISAYAMA Hajime.

Now, director Shinji Higuchi is working on a live action movie of Attack on Titans and he also made this strange commercial for Subaru. This movie will begin filming in summer 2014 for a planned summer 2015 release. The funny thing is, the ad probably has the same budget as the whole cartoon series.

In case you guys don't know anything about the anime, we'll tell you a little bit about what's going on. The action takes place in a fictional universe where mankind is pushed to the brink of extinction by monsters that came out of nowhere. To protect themselves, they build three concentrical walls of defense where all the world's population is gathered.

Fighting the titans, which come in different classes ranging from 3 meters to about 100, is the job of the armed forces who swing around on cables. The whole vibe is a sort of medieval Germany meets steampunk and the zombie apocalypse!

One day, a gigantic titan (the one at the end of the Subaru ad), makes a hole in the first wall. The main character, Eren Yeager (did we tell you there's a German theme?) witnesses his mother being eaten alive when he is young and promises to destroy them all. Ironically, he discovers an injection given to him by his father allows him to transform into a titan as well. The plot twists and turns as you discover the wall is actually made of titans, which are actually people who were transformed. We don't yet know how this is done, but leaked plot information suggest a mad scientist who wants revenge on the world creates a serum that turns people into these naked monsters, obsessed with eating and killing.

The Subaru commercial was revealed last week in Japan during the Morning show "Zip!". We've managed to find that clip and it shows a little bit of how actors were turned into titans using makeup. The woman you see in this picture needed four hours of makeup to go from normal to grotesque. A gigantic mouth, full of teeth is has been added, a vivid depiction of the veracious appetite for human consumption.
