Alfa Romeo has opened the order books for the new Tonale PHEV (plug-in hybrid) in Australia. The model is up for grabs at competitive pricing and will arrive at dealers this October.
Unlike the Tonale Hybrid, which is offered in two trim levels, Ti and Veloce, the Tonale PHEV is only marketed as a Veloce. Key features comprise the dedicated badging on the outside, automatic full LED matrix headlamps, Dark Miron accents, rear privacy windows, the Italian flag depicted on the side mirror caps, 19-inch alloys, and Brembo brakes with red calipers. The color palette comprises the standard White, with the Red, Black, Grey Metallic, Blue Metallic, and Green being optional.

Keyless entry and go is part of the standard list, and so is the sunroof. Shoppers will get heated and ventilated front seats with electric adjustment, a memory function for the driver, a heated steering wheel, heated washer nozzles, and USB A and C sockets. The premium subcompact crossover is also equipped with leather-accented seats, aluminum trim, ambient lighting, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital gauges, digital radio, 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Alfa Connect Services, wireless charging pad, and spare wheel.

The Tonale PHEV features Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, front, side, and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, active blind spot assist with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, lane support, autonomous emergency braking, driver behavior warning, traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed control, high-beam assist, self-parking feature, and a few other gizmos that will make the daily commute safer and more pleasant.

Power comes from a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that develops 132 kW (180 ps/177 hp), driving the front axle via a six-speed automatic transmission. An electric motor rated at 90 kW (122 ps/121 hp) drives the rear wheels, giving it an all-wheel drive capability. The total system output is 208 kW (283 ps/279 hp), and the Stellantis-owned Italian automaker claims it takes 6.2 seconds to accelerate to 100 kph (62 mph) from zero. With the 15.5 kWh battery fully charged, the model has an electric range of 60 km (37 miles). Recharging takes just under 2.5 hours at 7.4 kWh, and it's equipped with a 7.4 kWh AC charger for domestic and public charging.

Interested parties are looking at a base price of AU$77,500 (US$51,502) for the new Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV, excluding on-road costs and dealer delivery. Should they want a premium paint finish, they will have to cough out an extra AU$1,600 (US$1,063) or AU$2,500 (US 1,661), depending on the hue. The 20-inch alloys are an AU$1,500 (US$997) option. The model is already up for grabs Down Under, and the first units will arrive at dealers nationwide this fall.
