Acura Recalls 1,850 ZDX Models for Airbag Issues

Acura announced on Tuesday that it is recalling approximately 1,850 vehicles of its freshly launched 2010 ZDX crossover, the cause being a potential airbag problem. The recall is prompted by a dashboard material that was cut wrong, thus causing the passenger-side airbag to deploy improperly.

While no incidents have been reported, a manufacturing quality check revealed that some vehicles do not have the necessary laser-cut scoring on the underside of the dashboard surface material. Without proper scoring, the passenger side frontal airbag will not deploy properly”, read a press release issued by American Honda Motor Company.

After dealer inspection, if a ZDX is determined to have a dashboard without the proper scoring, the dashboard will be replaced. Owners of affected vehicles will be informed by mail later this month. In addition, ZDX owners can go to http://owners.acura.com/recalls or may call (800) 382-2238 for more information”, it added.

About two percent of the vehicles recalled are likely affected, spokesman Gary Robinson said, quoted by autonews.com. He added that the issue was discovered during a manufacturing quality check. The Acura ZDX was launched on December 15 2009 and was sold in 582 units as of April 1.

The Acura ZDX is a mid-size luxury crossover powered by an all-aluminium 3.7-liter V-6 engine mated to a Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission. The unit produces 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm and has a combined EPA estimated fuel consumption of 19 mpg. The car is also fitted with an all-wheel drive system, called Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, which is a fully automatic, full-time traction and handling system.
