A coule of burglars with a very unique modus operandi is said to have wreaked havoc in one villa in the French city of Saint Tropez last month.Their victims: former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond, his family, and 15 other guests.
According to the presenter’s wife, Mindy, the robbery of their rented holiday home took place while both of them, their kids and a few other guests were in the house. The woman claims the robbers went about their business without fear of being caught in the act.
Mindy has a theory about why this was so. She believes the robbers used some type of gas to knock them all out and go through all the rooms in the house.
“I’m pretty convinced we must have been gassed or something because they were in all of the bedrooms – they went where they wanted, into each room, opening and closing the drawers, searching through handbags, etc.," the woman told the Express.
“That morning I slept in until eight. I didn’t even wake to Richard’s snoring! Nobody woke up. “
There are, of course, countless holes in this Mindy theory. First, it’s doubtful any type of gas could have been used to knock anybody out, for several reasons.
Responding to a similar incident which was reported back in 2014, experts from the British Royal College of Anaesthetists said: “it would not be possible to render someone unconscious by blowing ether, chloroform or any of the currently used volatile anesthetic agents, through the window, even if they were sleeping at the time."
Not to mention these substances are neither easy to come buy, nor cheap.
Then there are the Mindy contradictions. Hammond’s wife says that she heard noises in the house after all, and went down to check only to convince herself it’s only the other guests.
To round things up, Mindy did say there were cocktails involved in the 1920s-themed party that preceded the incident.
As per her account to the Express, the two perpetrators were caught on camera and quickly apprehended by the police, although no one is saying whether they were seen gassing anybody or not.
The two crooks allegedly only walked away with the cash in the people’s wallets and purses, and a watch.
As a side note, Mindy says one of the robbers looked “quite a lot like Richard!”
