A GTX version of the Volkswagen ID.3 has been rumored for a few years now, and we finally have the first spy shots of the sporty electric vehicle.
Caught testing in the open in a premiere, the VW ID.3 GTX was previewed by the ID.X Concept shown in 2021 and had little to no camouflage on it. We reckon the German automaker assumed this would allow it to fly under the radar, but they were wrong because our spy photographers had their cameras ready, and the model became the focus of their lenses.

You will probably need a side-by-side comparison with the regular model to spot the novelties. However, they are there and include things such as the new front bumper with its sporty design. A new diffuser was also visible at the rear, and it rode on aerodynamically optimized wheels, presumably backed up by beefier brakes. The car appears to sit closer to the road, so we can expect some chassis enhancements, too.

While the interior is not exactly visible in these spy shots, enthusiasts should look forward to additional things that will separate it from the normal ID.3s here, as well. It is too early to speak about the possible cockpit upgrades, though stuff such as exclusive upholstery, maybe with black and red accents, dedicated load screens and submenus in the two main displays, and different trim are likely on the list.

Volkswagen's ID.X Concept had a total of 333 ps (328 hp/245 kW) on tap, produced by its pair of electric motors. The auto firm claimed it took 5.3 seconds to sprint to 100 kph (62 mph), which placed it between the GTI and R versions of the Golf hot hatch. But how much should we expect from the ID.3 GTX? Probably in the region of 300 metric horses (296 hp/221 kW) from its dual-motor setup, on par with the GTX versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 crossovers. This would give it an advantage of approximately 100 ps (99 hp/74 kW) over the regular ID.3, which needs a little over seven seconds to deal with the acceleration.

Even though this is the first time we get to see a prototype of the ID.3 GTX doing its thing on public roads, chances are the official unveiling is just around the corner. Mind you, Volkswagen hasn't mentioned anything about it yet, but reports indicate it might be due in a few months. The presentation could be hosted before the end of the year, and the model will hit the assembly line at the Zwickau factory in Germany, next to the regular ID.3, shortly after the grand premiere. It remains to be seen if it will also be made in China by SAIC-VW.
