Unveiled in 2015 and made at numerous factories all over the world, the eighth-generation Toyota Hilux has just entered the new model year in its home market of Japan, and it features several novelties.
Mind you, the list is rather short, and that's no surprise, considering we're talking about a few model year updates and not a new generation nor a mid-cycle refresh, but they should be enough to keep this rugged workhorse on the popular side of the segment.
According to the company based in the Land of the Rising Sun, the 2024 Toyota Hilux now features the Panoramic View camera system on the entry-level Z trim level at no extra cost. Moreover, the infotainment system and the reversing camera, which are also standard on the base flavor of the car, have been updated.
Next up comes the exterior, and the pickup does not sport updated front and rear ends. The wheels have remained the same, and the only novelty here comes in the form of a fresh paint finish. Replacing the Super White II is the Platinum White Pearl Mica, available as a manufacturer option on the Z and Z GR Sport. This is where Toyota drew the line as far as the 2024 model year updates of the Hilux are concerned.
Now, if you must know, despite being marketed as a GR Sport, this grade does not feature additional power. However, it does get some additional stuff to make it stand out more. A different face, wheel arches painted in the same color as the rest of the body, 18-inch wheels (the normal Z has 17-inch wheels) wrapped in 265/60 tires, and a few other goodies are on the list.
Speaking about the power, it is worth noting that all versions of the Toyota Hilux sold in Japan feature a single powertrain. It is the turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that kicks out 150 ps (148 hp/110 kW) at 3,400 rpm and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque available from 1,600 to 2,000 rpm.
Besides announcing the new model year novelties for the Hilux, Toyota has also put price tags on the two trim levels of the truck sold in Japan. Thus, for the Z grade, interested parties are looking at a minimum of 4,072,000 yen, whereas the Z GR Sport starts at 4,312,000 yen. This translates to $27,277 and $28,885, respectively, at the current exchange rates.
On a final note, we will remind you that the Hilux is no longer available in the United States, so shoppers will have to settle for the mechanically-unrelated Tacoma instead. This model has an MSRP of $28,600 in the base flavor, and for the 2024 Tundra, they will have to cough out at least $39,965 before destination and dealer markups.
