Subaru previewed the 2024 model year BRZ at Subiefest in the form of the new tS, a sporty version of the boxer-engined sports car. Unfortunately for BRZ enthusiasts, the newcomer is a bit on the underwhelming side of sports cars.
First and foremost, we should remind ourselves that – in Subaru vernacular – tS slots below STI. Secondly, the 2018 model year BRZ tS came with a manually adjustable carbon-fiber wing. This one does not, which is a bit disappointing. Carbon fiber isn't all that important for a lightweight vehicle, but less content for the new tS compared to the old one? That puts Subaru in a bad light, for certain!
The Japanese automaker couldn't even bother itself with a press release for the 2024 model, which makes it worse. Thankfully, photographic evidence shows what else is featured on the tS.
Bronze calipers are present at every corner, along with black wheels wrapped in Michelin rubber. We can also see a BRZ tS badge on the driver's side of the front grille, along with another BRZ tS badge on the passenger side of the trunk lid. Zooming in on the rearview camera further confirms EyeSight, which will become standard on manual-equipped cars for model year 2024.
As opposed to the 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition, which is limited to 860 units in the United States, the BRZ tS is a trim level rather than a special edition. The final upgrade comes in the guise of sportier dampers supplied by Hitachi.
Tuned by STI, the BRZ tS is apparently based on the Limited trim level. Looking even closer at the pictures uploaded to Reddit by u/PlatinumElement, we can further tell that we're dealing with four- and two-piston brake calipers, and Pilot Sport 4 summer performance tires.
Most likely exclusive to the tS, the mirror caps and shark fin-style antenna are finished in gloss black. The BRZ lettering in the headlights feature the same red as the S on the tS badges up front and out back, whereas the cabin boasts blue accents.
Manufactured in Japan alongside the GR86, the BRZ will enter the 2024 model year in earnest in late 2023. The range-topping BRZ tS is believed to arrive at dealers nationwide during the first quarter with a higher MSRP than the Limited.
Speaking of pricing, the 2023 model is currently listed at $28,595 for the Premium and $31,095 for the Limited. Both of them can be configured with a six-speed automatic that shouldn't have been greenlighted for this application, for it defeats the purpose of a 2,815-lb (1,277-kg) sports car.
Both grades come with five years of powertrain warranty, which may come in handy if you intend to track your vehicle. More specifically, the BRZ and GR86 are notorious for losing oil pressure in right turns. Many reports of engine failure made the rounds, yet Subaru hasn't addressed this problem of the FA24D mill.
