As the Volkswagen Group tried to solve its software problems, Porsche Macan EV got the short stick, with the launch delayed significantly. Audi recently showed off its side of the story with the Q6 e-tron prototype, so Porsche replied in kind and dropped almost all camo from the electric Macan.
Our photographers have been feeding us with pictures of the Porsche Macan EV prototypes for some time now, most of them trying to pass as a Cayenne. Volkswagen Group's brands have become pretty expert at disguising their prototypes as production models, and we've seen how they used tape and graphics to make a car look like something else. It happened with the upcoming Volkswagen Passat, the recently-launched ID.7, and now with the Porsche Macan.

Still, our eagle-eyed colleagues were not fooled. Despite the colored stickers and fake exhaust, the prototypes they've been spying on for the past year have proven to be the electric Macan and not some weird version of the Cayenne. By now, either Porsche has given up on using camo, or we've been extremely lucky because we now have the first pictures of the Macan caught almost undisguised during tests.

Black tape still covers some areas, especially at the back, but make no mistake, the Macan EV has come up in the open. We still don't know what it hides in the outer corners of the rear bumper, although we go out on a limb and say those are air outlets. Besides that, the Porsche Macan dropped the fake exhausts and now proudly showcases the coupe-SUV silhouette it previously tried to hide. This is the most obvious difference compared to its four-ringed cousin Q6 e-tron, which was just presented in a funny color scheme.

The Porsche Macan EV and the Audi Q6 e-tron share many technicalities, being built on the same Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture. Still, the Macan EV will keep the upper hand, with up to 603 horsepower in a dual motor configuration. The Audi Q6 e-tron, on the other hand, peaks at 503 horsepower for the SQ6 e-tron variant. The Macan EV also showed it sports a rear-wheel steering system (see it in the gallery), while we've seen no similar information about the Audi Q6 e-tron.

Like its bigger brother Taycan, the Macan EV adopts an 800-volt electric architecture, allowing short charging times and brisk performance. Previous sightings of a Macan EV prototype at charging stations showed that charging performance is top-notch, even in cold weather, thanks to the 270-kW fast-charging capability. Rough calculations based on these images suggest the Macan EV will have a battery pack with a capacity of about 100 kWh, which Audi already confirmed for its model.

The unveiling of the Porsche Macan EV has been rumored to have been pushed back to 2024, but new information shows that Porsche aims to launch the electric crossover by the end of the year. Either way, it will arrive at dealerships as a 2024 model sometime in the first months of next year.
