Undoubtedly, the J250 third-generation Lexus GX is something to behold – not just the more expensive, ritzier TNGA-F body-on-frame twin of the returning 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser.
Already up for grabs, unlike its less expensive sibling from Toyota, the 2024 GX 550 is powered by the well-known V35A-FTS 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 packing 349 hp and 479 lb-ft (649 Nm), enough for a towing capacity of no less than 8,000 lbs. (3,600 kg). It starts from $64,250 – more than $4k above the starting MSRP of its 2023 predecessor – and is available with six trims: Premium, Premium +, Luxury, Luxury +, and the all-new Overtrail and Overtrail+.

Obviously, Lexus wanted to make a statement about the GX capabilities with the fresh Overtrail grades – much in the same way Toyota is going down the Trailhunter route. As such, it is no wonder they graced the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon with an all-terrain explorer, a GX 550 Overtrail that has become a veritable overlander with help from Jaos after receiving multiple off-roading goodies.

It's easy to say that it's really not that hard to bring out the beast within after seeing that demonstrator. However, let us be frank. How many GX clients will take their luxury SUVs to the far corners of the Earth and beyond? In fact, how many of these off-roaders will ever see the ins and outs of an off-road trail? Not too many, probably, as some people might have trouble sleeping if their $80k+ new SUV takes a beating. Instead, some of them will settle on light off-roading to the luxury resort and going out and about in town as veritable mall crawlers.

Well, for them, the imaginative realm of digital car content creators has prepared the most common scenario. More precisely, Nikita Chuicko, the virtual artist better known as kelsonik on social media, thinks now is the right CGI time to make the GX 550 a ritzy SUV rather than an off-road 'brute.' As such, his vision revolves around giving the Lexus SUV a couple of aftermarket-type new sets of wheels. With classic or concave style, these black pieces achieve near-instantaneous results – they're a lot bigger than OEM, and at long last, the proportion between the wheel and the rest of the vehicle doesn't seem whacky anymore.

So, do you like one of these wheel designs or not? Also, would you keep the 2024 GX 550 pristine in a heated garage, or will the luxury SUV see a trail every different weekend? One last question. Do you think it's worth investing in the $65k and above Lexus GX 550, or is it better to wait a little for the potentially cheaper 2024 Land Cruiser, even if it means trading out a few ponies – 349 versus 326 hybrid hp?
