There is an entirely new kid in the S650 Ford Mustang family: the Shelby Super Snake. The venomous proposal offers 830 hp (842 ps/619 kW) from its supercharged 5.0L V8, and it's capped at 250 copies for the 2024 model year.
Thus, interested parties must hurry up to snatch one up. Otherwise, they'd be left with the usual EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse variants. The latter enjoys 500 hp (507 ps/373 kW) and 418 lb-ft( 567 Nm) of torque from its 5.0L Coyote V8.

Do you know what other 2024 'Stang features this motor? Yep, the GT. It produces 480 hp (487 ps/358 kW) and 415 lb-ft (563 Nm). Order it with the optional performance exhaust system, and it will put out 486 hp (493 ps/363 kW) and 418 lb-ft (567 Nm).

Unlike the base EcoBoost, which features a 2.3L four-pot with 350 hp (355 ps/261 kW), the GT and Dark Horse can also be ordered with a six-speed manual transmission in addition to the ten-speed auto. Power goes to the rear wheels in all versions, as this is, after all, a real muscle car.

In theory, the 2024 Ford Mustang competes with the all-new Dodge Charger. The latter comes with EV and ICE power in two body styles, coupe and sedan. In practice, however, its challenger (pun intended) is not available yet, and with Chevy dropping the sixth-gen Camaro at the end of 2023, the Blue Oval's machine is the only muscle car currently on sale.

The S650 generation Mustang has already proved its worth in various tests, including down the quarter mile against similarly fast rides. It recently did it again, and its rival this time was the Volkswagen Golf R. According to The Fast Lane Car, which organized several drag races between the two in Colorado, from a standing and a rolling start, both cost around $46,000.

While the Mustang GT put to the test below came with the ten-speed auto, the Golf R featured a manual gearbox. The hot hatch was also equipped with all-wheel drive, which is one main trait that separates it from the FWD GTI. The R comes with a 2.0L turbocharged engine that develops 315 horsepower (319 ps/235 kW) and 295 pound-foot (400 Nm) of torque.

As a result, there is a big output gap between the Mustang GT and Golf R. Still, the latter is significantly lighter than its ad-hoc challenger and features AWD. So, could this be the advantage it needs to show the muscle car its taillights in a straight-line sprint? Well, we won't ruin the outcome, but we will tell you that one crossed the finish line in some 13 seconds, and the other was around three seconds slower.
