With Ford kicking off the deliveries of the 2024 Mustang a few months ago, more and more copies of the new generation muscle car have started being put through their paces in all kinds of challenges, including at various drag strips all over the nation.
That is where the black copy shown on video at the bottom of this story was filmed not long ago, at the Island Dragway in New Jersey, to be more precise. The model is in the (current) range-topping Dark Horse configuration, which builds on the normal V8-powered GT, albeit with a bit more oomph.

The 5.0-liter naturally aspirated unit is good for 500 horsepower (507 ps/373 kW) and 418 pound-feet (567 Nm) of torque. That is 20 hp (20 ps/15 kW) and 3 lb-ft (4 Nm) more than the 2024 Mustang GT, deployed to the rear wheels through the optional ten-speed automatic transmission or standard six-speed manual.

How much does everything cost? That would be a cool $59,270, excluding destination, with the Premium trim level carrying an MSRP of $63,265. The regular GT Fastback is a $42,495 affair before destination, options, and dealer markups, and the new Mustang is also offered with the 2.3L four-pot, aka the EcoBoost, which starts at $30,920.

Now, the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse is more than capable of injecting its occupants with a big dose of adrenaline, but can it really compare to the mighty Shelby GT500 from the S550 generation, which is basically a supercar killer dressed in blue-collar attire? That's what we are about to find out as these two models put their money where their mouths are and engaged in a straight-line battle down the quarter mile.

Before moving on to the video, we will remind you that the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 sits in a superior league, with 760 hp (771 ps/567 kW) available on tap and 625 pound-feet (847 Nm) of torque. The 5.2-liter V8 features supercharging, and the car takes just three seconds to sixty miles an hour or ninety-seven kilometers per hour. So long as the driver knows what they're doing, it is a ten-second car down the quarter mile, albeit in perfect weather and with a flawless takeoff.

We obviously won't spoil the outcome of the video, which is only half a minute long. Nonetheless, we will tell you that one of them made its way across the finish line in 11.85 seconds and the other in 10.24 seconds, with respective exit speeds of 120.09 and 137.96 miles per hour (193.27-222.03 kph). If you don't want to watch the clip, there's a different way to find out which one went across the finish line first, and that's by hitting the photo gallery above. Regardless of choice, enjoy!
