With Ford kicking off deliveries of the new-gen Mustang a few months ago, we have already seen the muscle car doing its thing in different scenarios.
More recently, the 2024 Ford Mustang has started hitting the drag strip occassionally, and it was at such an event recently where it met the big bad Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk for a good-old quarter-mile battle at the Island Dragway in New Jersey, presumably a few days ago.
As highlighted by 5.0 logos on the front fenders, the white pony car in question was in the GT configuration. This means that it packs the brand's new 5.0-liter Coyote V8. The naturally aspirated engine produces 480 horsepower (487 ps/358 kW) and 415 pound-feet (563 Nm) of torque on 93-octane fuel, with the thrust increasing to 418 lb-ft (567 Nm) when ordering it with the active exhaust system.
The new Ford Mustang has been clocked a few tenths over the four-second mark for the naught to sixty mph (0 to 97 kph) acceleration. Unofficial tests have proved it to be a 12.5-second car down the quarter-mile. However, this one turned out to be a bit quicker than that in the head-to-head battle against the super SUV, completing the sprint in 12.36 seconds with an exit speed of 103.83 mph (167.1 kph).
If you forgot just how fast the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is, it needs only 3.4 seconds to deal with the sprint. This places it in the same zone as the modern-day blue-blooded high-riders, and in some instances, it can also smoke some lesser supercars in a straight-line sprint. The model features the 6.2-liter supercharged V8, aka the Hellcat motor, which kicks out 707 hp (717 ps/527 kW) and 645 lb-ft (875 Nm) of torque.
Without any outside intervention, the demised model (the new-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee doesn't feature a Trackhawk version anymore) is an absolute beast down the quarter mile. In fact, it's been clocked at eleven seconds, which is very impressive for such a vehicle that doubles as a school bus and is a great daily driver, so long as you don't care about fuel consumption, as it is one thirsty animal. And a costly one, with barely-driven copies often changing hands for six digits.
Now, is the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk really capable of smoking the new-gen Ford Mustang GT down the quarter mile? The answer lies just one mouse click away in the video shared below, and we won't spoil the outcome, as you should see it for yourself. By the way, this bad Jeep also tried its luck against other fast machines on that day, and you can watch it in action right after the small jump. The Trackhawk vs. Mustang action starts at the 0:28 mark.
