The Hornet entered 2024 in grand style, with Dodge premiering the R/T specification. It's the American brand's first electrified performance model, with the Hornet R/T boasting 288 horsepower, 383 pound-feet (520 Nm) of torque, and up to 32 miles (51 kilometers) of electric driving range thanks to a 15.5-kWh battery.
Important numbers further include 77 MPGe, as per the Environmental Protection Agency, and up to 360 miles (579 kilometers) of total driving range from a full battery charge and a full tank of gas. Described as being a performance hybrid, the plug-in hybrid crossover is joined at the hip to the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The Italian sibling has many other powertrain choices in the Old Continent, where it's also manufactured, but comes exclusively as a plug-in hybrid in the US. Weirdly enough, Canada gets a 2.0-liter turbo I4 lump as well.

Turning our attention back to the Hornet R/T, a 1.3-liter turbo I4 engine drives the front wheels. The rear end is where you'll find an electric motor, which is tasked with driving the rear wheels, therefore resulting in e-AWD.

Another trick up the Hornet R/T's proverbial sleeve is the PowerShot function, which summons 30 horsepower for a short while. Said ponies help the plug-in crossover hit 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in 5.6 seconds compared to 6.5 seconds for the internal combustion-only Hornet GT in Sport Mode. As expected, the GT model is all-wheel drive by default.

The R/T comes in two flavors: $40,935 for the R/T and $45,935 for the R/T Plus. The latter builds on the former with the addition of eight-way power adjustments for the front passenger seat, full leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a sunroof, a hands-free power tailgate, and Harman Kardon audio. Don't be fooled by the fancy name of the audio system, though, because Harman Kardon's quality has gone downhill ever since Samsung Electronics acquired the American outfit.

Curious how much power the rear-mounted electric motor of the Hornet R/T packs? Make that 90 kW at most, which converts to 120 ponies. The lithium-ion battery integrates a refrigerant gas cooling circuit, whereas the 1.3-liter turbo features a belt-type starter generator instead of a regular starter and alternator.

The 7.4-kW charging module allows the 15.5-kW pack to be recharged from a Level 2 charger in just around 2.5 hours. Curiously enough, Stellantis couldn't do better than a six-speed automatic in the Hornet R/T.

Downgrading to the Hornet GT gets you a nine-speed automatic supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen. As with the R/T, the GT also comes in two versions: GT and GT Plus. The online configurator lists them at $30,735 and $35,735 (sans destination charge). The GT is advertised as the compact segment's most powerful gas-engine crossover thanks to 268 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm).
