Another prototype of the next-generation BMW X2 became the focus of the camera lens, and it is in the range-topping M35i guise. It has lost its premium jacked-up hatchback flair and looks like a smaller version of the X6 and X4, a much-deserved upgrade that finally makes it worthy of the moniker.
The trippy camouflage was still present, though it was thinner at the front, where it has a grille with horizontal slats that appears to have been inspired by that of the latest M2 Coupe. It has larger air intakes in the bumper and a pair of sweptback headlamps that seem to be similar to those of the X1, aka the more practical model that doesn't feature a sloping roofline. A spoiler was attached to the tailgate, below the rear windscreen, and it has quad tailpipes coming out from the diffuser.

Due to the aggressive design, highlighted by the special grille and four tailpipes, we can tell that this is a top flavor of the premium subcompact crossover coupe that will probably take a swing at the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35. Chances are it is the M35i variant, which is expected to still pack a 2.0-liter four-banger, just like its predecessor. Mated to a quick-shifting automatic transmission and front-biased all-wheel drive, the gasoline burner will produce at least 302 horsepower (306 ps/225 kW). The straight-line performance should be improved, and it might take just under five seconds to sprint to 62 miles an hour (100 kph) from a standstill.

On the inside, the M35i variant of the next-gen BMW X2 will set itself apart from the lesser models by featuring bucket seats for the driver and front passenger, as well as M logos, new trim and upholstery, and probably a different steering wheel. Elsewhere, it will get the same curved display, which will be the most eye-catching part of the redesigned cockpit. A toggle switch replaced the traditional gear selector, and different buttons surround it. Storage spaces appear to have improved, and the cabin will likely be bathed in ambient lighting. Look for stuff such as smartphone integration, a wireless charging pad, and over-the-air updates that will allow future owners to enjoy improved functionality without having to take a trip to the local dealership.

BMW has yet to announce when the all-new X2 will premiere, but in all likelihood, it is due in a few months. Chances are the M35i variant will be introduced at a later date, and it should be the top-of-the-line grade of the series. Therefore, do not hold your breath for a full-blown X2 M, as it won't happen, even though it would be positioned against the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45. Expect minor price bumps across the range when it goes on sale, probably later this year.
