The 2024 Acura ZDX is the brand's first all-electric vehicle. As the market currently dictates, it had to be a crossover SUV. But there's nothing wrong with that. Customers love a higher driving position and improved ground clearance. As such, if you are ready to be among the first to drive Acura's incursion into the zero-tailpipe emission world, here's what's available.
After years of being a spectator to the electric vehicle race, Acura is finally coming forward with one of its own. But it's not a Japanese-made SUV. It's not even manufactured in America. The ZDX and the ZDX Type S will be made in Mexico. General Motors will handle the production process at its Ramos Arizpe Plant.
Honda's sportier and more luxurious division launched the ZDX four days before Monterey Car Week was supposed to end and did it right. We now have the most important specs, price ranges, high-quality pictures, and *drum roll* a configurator! Sort of, at least.
The SUV is available in four trims – A-Spec RWD, A-Spec AWD, Type S, and Type S Performance Wheel & Tire.
The A-Spec RWD is equipped rather well, which was expected considering that the starting price will likely be above the $60,000 threshold. The 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system is one of the most important options. The estimated range on a full charge is 325 miles.
The A-Spec AWD adds another motor on the front axle and roof rails. It remains in the $60,000 range but will most likely be above the $65,000 mark. The maximum possible range drops to 315 miles.
The pricy Type S adds adaptive air suspension, hands-free driving that's most likely based on GM's Super Cruise, more horsepower, Brembo front brake calipers, and the elegant yet striking Tiger Eye Pearl Color. All these goodies mean the MSRP climbs over the $70,000 threshold.
Performance and more equipment also come with a range penalty – 288 miles, 37 miles less than the A-Spec AWD, and 47 miles less than the "entry-level" A-Spec RWD.
Those interested in obtaining the best zero-tailpipe emission Acura driving experience will have to spend a little more for the Type S with 22-inch wheels and high-performance summer tires. We don't know the curb weight of the ZDX Type S, but the automaker promises a 50/50 distribution. If the suspension system is set up properly and the bags can support some spirited driving, then it might make sense to spend over $70,000 on a first-generation EV with GM underpinnings.
The configurator is rudimentary, but it allows those interested to choose the preferred trim, exterior color, and interior upholstery and to place a reservation.
Finally, Acura says that placing a reservation does not guarantee a purchase and does not force US citizens into an acquisition. Although Acura was supposed to go on the direct sales route, it still wants prospective ZDX owners to contact a dealer.
