Even though most people prefer their trucks to feature a more no-nonsense type of appearance, others will gladly be seen driving something with a little more road presence. This limited series Bandit Edition Chevy Silverado 1500 fits that bill perfectly.
I’m sure most of you are familiar with the movie Smokey and the Bandit, starring Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jerry Reed and Jackie Gleason. It’s about a man named Bo “Bandit” Darville who embarks on a mission to bootleg a truckload of Coors beer from Texas to Georgia faster than you can say “breaker one-nine".
In the movie, the Bandit’s iconic black Pontiac Trans Am becomes more than just a car. It's a symbol of freedom, rebellion, and a fine taste in automobiles. Pontiac made four 1977 Trans Am available for the production of the movie, although technically they were 1976-model year cars with 1977 front ends, while the decals were change to 1977-style units.
With that in mind, meet the limited series Bandit Edition Chevrolet Silverado 1500, a Crew Cab Custom model with Bandit-themed graphics and aftermarket black and gold 24” wheels. This truck is currently up for grabs to the highest bidder with just 2,400 miles (3,860 km) on its turbocharged four-pot.
Aside from the Bandit and Outlaw graphics (hood, body, tailgate), this Silverado also comes with an aftermarket hood scoop, a receiver hitch, a tonneau cover, and 35 x 12.5” Haida tires for those gorgeous 24s.
Meanwhile, interior highlights include the black cloth seats with Bandit branding on the headrests, a power-adjustable driver seat, trailer brake controller, power windows, locks and mirrors, woodgrain trim, cruise control, air conditioning, all-weather floor mats, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Wi-Fi connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
As for the engine, it’s not exactly something to write home about, but it’s surprisingly good. We’re talking about a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit, putting down 310 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque with the help of an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In a straight line, this truck will get you from zero to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, a full second quicker than Chevy’s old naturally aspirated 4.3-liter V6 variant. GM developed the 2.7L turbo as a truck engine from the outset, hence the generous low-end torque.
Of course, nowadays, you’ve got plenty more engines to choose from within the Chevy Silverado range, yet the only ones that offer more pulling power than the 2.7L turbo are the 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel and the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8, both of which produce 460 lb-ft of torque.
It’ll be interesting to see what the winning bid on this Bandit-themed Silverado is going to look like. Back in April of last year, a similar truck (but with fewer miles) sold for $77,000 at auction. My guess is this particular Silverado won’t quite hit that mark, but it should still fetch a pretty penny.
