You know how women go to the salon, cut off half an inch and demand that you notice "the big change." It's a bad stereotype to talk about, we know, but the 2020 Audi A5 and S5 models feel like that today at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The good news is that we know more about cars and Audis than we do haircare, so we can tell you exactly what Audi changed on the fresh coupe and convertible models. But it's amazing how the Audi A5 has gone from being called one of the most beautiful cars in the world to a minor model. We call this the Q8 effect!
But anyway, we'll start with the A5, seen here as a convertible with the 204 horsepower "40 TDI" engine. It gets a honeycomb effect for the main grille instead of chrome bars, at least with this S line body kit. The side intakes have been revised as well and a chin spoiler has been sculpted into the bottom of the bumper. Both the headlights and taillights have revised graphics, but only hardcore fans of the model will be able to tell.
Meanwhile, the interior just sports a new infotainment system that's controlled via touch alone, resulting in a cubby space appearing where the MMI dial was. Of course, there are more connectivity and convenience features, but it still depends on how much you'll spend. BMW and Mercedes definitely do more interesting interiors, though not in this segment at the moment.
Then we arrive at the 2020 S5 Coupe, sporting the new 3.0 TDI engine for the European market. Confusingly, Audi announced the engine for the S5 pre-facelift, making us wonder if they're going to assembly a few months' worth of older-looking S5 TDI models. Regardless, the powertrain seems like a good change, offering about the same power but a lot more torque and superior fuel economy. It's also sporting shameful fake exhausts on the right side of the car.
