Three years after it unveiled the second generation of the A5 line, Audi decided to give it an update, bringing to the market all of the things the 2016 version lacked, from new touchscreens at the interior to mild-hybrid systems under the hood.
The visual changes for the facelift are not all that major compared to the existing variant, and most of the updates are concentrated at the front end.
There sits a wider and flatted Singleframe grille, surrounded by ventilation slits, larger air inlets and a new sill to enhance the look from the side,
The interior comes with a few new touches as well, the most noticeable being the removal of the rotary pushbutton on the center control. It has been replaced by a 10.1-inch touchscreen with acoustic feedback that can be operated by voice.
Complementing this screen is the optional 12.3-inch display of the virtual cockpit through which other functions like telephony and the Audi connect services can be accessed.
Engine-wise, the most significant change is the addition of a mild-hybrid system to the car. Four of the engines that will go into the A5 will feature this option, one Audi says can save 0.4 liters of fuel per 100 km.
The sportier interpretation of the A5, the S5, gets a significant change under the hood, getting a 3.0-liter diesel V6. This change is happening for the S5 that sells in Europe.
Regardless of model, all engines are paired to automatic transmissions, be it a seven-speed S tronic or an eight-speed tiptronic. For the top range models, quattro comes as standard, while the others only get it as an option.
The new A5 line can be ordered from later this fall. The car sells from €42,900 for the entry-level A5 Coupé 40 TFSI and rises to €66,500 for the S5.
