At the end of the month, the world-famous Pikes Peak hill climb challenge returns for this year’s edition. As the cars lining up at the bottom of the hill target beating the all-time record set by the Volkswagen ID last year, Acura will also take on a more decorative role.
The carmaker said this week that on June 30, its American-designed and built NSX supercar will act as a pace car for the competitors. This is the fifth time in a row the NSX is pacing the climb, but the first for the 2019 variant of the car.
Behind the wheel of the NSX will sit David Donner, six-time champion at Pikes Peak and the current holder of the record for the Time Attack 2 Production Class.
To be distinguishable from the pack of other NSX cars on the road, the Pikes Peak version wears a special livery placed on top of the regular Thermal Orange Pearl paint.
Aside from the entry of the NSX as a pace car, four other Acura models will be on site for the challenge, all to be driven by the company’s own engineers. The four models are the MDX Sport Hybrid, RDX A-Spec,time attack NSX and production-spec NSX.
The Acura name is one of the most prominent of the Pikes Peak challenge. Over the past eight years, the carmaker managed to reach the top of the hill each time. In 2018, one of its cars won the Open class and scored an overall third place finish with the RealTime Racing TLX GT.
The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is an annual event that has cars take on a climb of 4,720 ft (1,440 m) from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway, to the finish at 14,110 ft (4,300 m) above sea level. The road is made up of over 156 turns spread over a 12.42 miles (20 km) distance.
