When Porsche introduced the Cayenne, it did so to save itself from extinction. The sporty… um, sport utility vehicle went on to be the best-selling Porsche nameplate of them all. Then the Macan compact luxury crossover stole the sales crown.
Now in its second generation, the Cayenne as we know it hasn’t changed much since it went into production in 2010. Seven years on, it’s high time for the German automaker to bring something new to the table, something even sportier, more technologized, and more luxurious than the current model.

According to Car & Driver, the newcomer should be unveiled on August 29. The report suggests only force-fed V6 power will be offered in the first instance, with the twin-turbo V8 engine to make its debut later on at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Based on the latest spy photos, which leave little to the imagination of expecting customers, the C & D write-up holds water.

Porsche recently organized a media preview of the 2018 Cayenne, and all the German publications reflect Car & Driver’s information on the debut. Based on the MLB platform that underpins the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga, the third-generation Cayenne will borrow many bits and bobs from the Panamera, including the modern-looking cockpit layout. Reportedly, expect a drop in curb weight of up to 70 kg (154 pounds) compared to the old Cayenne.

Expected to start in Germany from approximately 70,000 euros, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne will gain turbo diesel power at some point in the near future. Regardless of what sort of engine hides under the hood, the high-riding breed will make use of the silky smooth ZF 8HP eight-speed auto.

Internally referred to as E3, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne will likely borrow the plug-in hybrid powertrain from the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid. The latter is expected to act as the range-topping derivative, packing 680 PS (671 horsepower) and 850 Nm (627 pound-feet) of oomph.
