As we know it, the Ghibli has been around since the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. After a small-scale update for the 2017 model year, 2018 sees the mid-size sedan get a mid-cycle nip and tuck. And Ferrari Portofino-like headlights.
Seriously, just look at the Portofino and the refreshed Ghibli side by side. The resemblance is uncanny, but who could blame Maserati? After all, the House of the Trident is the sister brand of Maranello’s best and a part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The adaptive full-LED headlights with glare-free Matrix High-Beam technology are only the start, though, as we get to the more serious stuff.
Rechristened Ghibli GranLusso, the luxury sports sedan boasts an all-new front bumper with chrome inserts and the latest Maserati design language. At the base of the front fenders, you’ll also notice GranLusso badging. At the rear, the redesigned bumper prides itself on a body-colored rear extractor, slightly different taillights, as well as the trademark quad-pipe exhaust system.
For whatever reason, Maserati hasn’t released any photographs of the interior, but don’t expect anything more than small updates to the Uconnect-based infotainment system and leather upholstery options. Safety and driver assistance are two other areas the Italian automaker did its best to update the BMW 5 Series rival, the highlight being autonomous driving technology.
In the oily bits department, expect 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engines across the board. The entry-level plant is good for 345 horsepower (257 kW), whereas the performance package known as S unleashes 404 horsepower to all four wheels. Over in Europe, the Ghibli is also available with diesel power. The transmission, as before, comes in the form of the ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic also employed by the likes of BMW and 2018 Jeep Wrangler.
All the information the automaker hasn’t released yet will be made public on August 25, when the 2018 Maserati Ghibli GranLusso will make its appearance at the 2017 Chengdu Motor Show in China. About the all-new GranTurismo and Alfieri sports car, you'll have to wait a bit longer for those two to materialize.
