The gauntlet has been laid last year, when a production Nissan LEAF was the first car to bag a Pikes Peak Production Class Trophy. With the exception of the added safety cage and tires specially designed for the conditions, it managed to outpace some combustion engined cars, since electric engines are not affected by differences in the air density as they don’t rely on combustion.
Now Mitsubishi wants a part of the action, and they will enter a heavily modified i-MiEV Pikes Peak prototype. Basically, it’s an extreme body adapt to creating the downforce specific to the Pikes Peak Colorado course, but the drivetrain uses the same engine and battery as the production i-MiEV electric car.
Mitsubishi say they want to test the durability of future components for EVs and Plug-in EVs, but with a car like this, they must also want some electric glory.
