Sixty years ago, Alec Issigonis got to see for the first time his two-door small car rolling off the assembly lines of what was then the British Motor Corporation. Later known as the Mark I MINI, the car started a trend that can still be experienced today.
On August 11, at the International Mini Meeting in Bristol, the UK, MINI is throwing a monstrous party expected to draw thousands at Washingpool Farm, Easter Compton. The carmaker calls it “the world’s biggest birthday party” because that’s where it plans to blow on the birthday cake.

The MINI event is an international one, and it usually changes venues and countries every year. Coincidently or not, the nameplate will be celebrating six decades of existence in its home country.

To properly mark the occasion, a fleet of 60 MINI cars representing each of the production years are assembling in a convoy that is to depart for Bristol. Leading the pack is an original 1959 MINI, seconded by a 2019 MINI 60 Years Edition.

The present-day car just rolled off assembly lines in Oxford. As a coincidence of monumental proportions, the 2019 MINI 60 Years Edition is the ten-millionth vehicle to have ever been made at the said facility.

Presented at the start of 2019, the anniversary model is offered for both the 3-and 5-door variants of the car and comes with unique styling, including British Racing Green bodywork and exclusive Dark Maroon leather on the interior.

“Seeing the ten-millionth vehicle of our brand come off the production line here in Oxford was a moment of pride for all the employees. Some of them have family members who were already producing the classic Mini at this site,” said in a statement the factory’s top executive, Peter Weber.

“This is a wonderful chapter in the history of MINI and proof of the passion that our customers have for this very special British motor car.”
