More or less the cooler brother of the BMW i3s, the MINI Cooper SE combines a 32.6-kWh battery with a synchronous electric motor with 184 PS (181 horsepower) on tap and 270 Nm (199 pound-feet) of torque available from standstill. Adding insult to injury, the all-electric model hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.3 seconds while top speed is limited to 150 km/h (93 mph).
The Cooper S is quicker and faster, and as if that wasn’t enough, the John Cooper Works will run rings around the all-new model based on a modified version of the UKL vehicle architecture. Because the battery is located deep within the floor, trunk space is particularly impressive for this type of car and the center of gravity is 30 millimeters lower than in the Cooper S.

Care to guess what’s the range of the Cooper SE? Expect anything between 235 and 270 kilometers, translating to 146 and 168 miles on a full charge. The BMW i3s, therefore, is the better pick thanks to 285 or 310 kilometers (177 or 193 miles) on the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure. There’s no denying MINI could have done a better job, alright!

MINI further claims the Cooper SE is “the first small car in the premium segment to run on electrical power only,” but that’s not true if you remember the luxury brand of Groupe PSA. Reservations for the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense are live since July 1st, and the 50-kWh battery of the French crossover promises 320 kilometers (200 miles) on the aforementioned test cycle.

Charging the Cooper SE can be done at a household socket, wallbox, or charging station at up to 50 kW. Fast-charging capability translates to 80 percent charge in 35 minutes, and an installation service called MINI ELECTRIC Wallbox is also available as an optional extra. The ChargeNow service is another highlight, allowing the customer to access the biggest network of charging stations by means of the ChargeNow card or the service’s smartphone app.

Satellite navigation comes standard along with the 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and eDrive digital instrument cluster. The software is specific to this model, meaning that the navigation system is geared towards electromobility first and foremost.
