The second half of 2019 is certain to be a very exciting one for the auto industry as an increasing number of “first ever” electric vehicles will be launched by carmakers across the world. Among them, the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, the first electric car coming from Citroen’s spin-off brand.
On Monday (July 1) DS announced it has opened the reservation books for the model, expecting to honor the orders in January 2020 at the earliest. To be offered in the same trim levels as the internal combustion engine versions of it, the E-Tense sells from £32,350.
Powered by a 50kWh Lithium-ion battery, the DS 3 comes with a range of 200 miles as measured in the WLTP cycle (322 km) and the promise of a full recharge in 5 hours minimum, using a standard public terminal. Using a 100 kW rapid charge system, that time drops to 30 minutes.
Spinning the wheels is a 136 hp electric motor that can accelerate the car from a standstill to 62 mph in 8.7 seconds.
Visually, apart from some minor tweaks like the Pearl Crystal paint, satin-chrome finishes, and signature emblems, there’s not much setting the E-Tense apart from the rest of the DS 3 range. The same can be said on the inside, where the changes are also minor.
The DS 3 electric was shown for the first time in October 2018 at the Paris Motor Show. And this electric car is just the beginning. The still limited lineup of DS vehicles will comprise an electrified variant for all the models in the coming years, as the French are trying to keep pace with all the other bigger names of the industry.
“From this year onwards, each of our models will be offered with an E-Tense, BEV or PHEV, version, which uses energy in the most efficient way supplemented by regenerating energy during deceleration,” said in a statement the company’s CEO Yves Bonnefont
“DS 3 Crossback E-Tense and DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 4x4 are the realisation of our electrification strategy with no compromise in space, while unparalleled in style and comfort.”
