Things are about to change in the world of the 2-wheeled motorsport, and if you thought that Dorna's take on MotoGP with spec ECU and the like was all, you were far from the truth. Dorna wants a bigger differentiation between MotoGP prototypes and the rest of the series, namely the Superbike.
Plans are that the series shifts from the actual superbike machines to naked bikes. World Superbike boss Javier Alonso is already in discussions with HRC, Yamaha and Ducati, and telephone discussions have taken place with Kawasaki and Suzuki.
However, among the bike manufacturers, BMW and Ducati are the only ones which manage to sell significant amounts of faired superbikes, and this might not be to their liking. Other makers are forwarding rather modest figures in this segment, while their naked bikes sell way better, so such a shift in WSBK will be gladly embraced.
WSBK will retain the logo, but proposals are that the S stood for "Streetbike". Other guidelines could be imposed, such as the 140 HP max power, minimum weight of 220 kg (485.6 lbs), without limitations to the way these values re met. This means the manufacturers could either strip or load ballast on their machines, beef up the smaller engines or detune the more powerful ones.
Only two fairing elements will be allowed: the bikini one and the belly pan, the latter for obvious safety reasons (oil collecting). Today (April 1st) a press release is expected from Dorna and we expect it to shed some light on the future of SBK. Hopefully, this is no April 1st joke. Source Asphalt and Rubber.
