Photos of the upcoming Volvo EM90 have been leaked in China almost a whole month ahead of the van's debut. The EM90 is Volvo's first MPV and the first non-crossover/SUV model that the carmaker launches since 2019.
The photos of the EM90 were posted online by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). It is standard procedure for the homologation certification of every model that is to be marketed there. This is how we get to see the entire exterior design of the upcoming van for the first time. The photos are way more revealing than what Volvo released last month in a teaser.

Volvo's upcoming van is based on the Zeekr 009 and comes with a minimalist design and an angular shape, which is nearly identical to that of the Chinese model. We do know, though, that the Volvo is 3 millimeters (0.11 inches) shorter and is 11 millimeters (0.43 inches) lower than the 009.

The Thor's hammer headlights, similar to what we are currently seeing on the electric EX30 and EX90 flagship, instantly draw attention to the front end. They flank an upright grille-like panel that supports the Volvo badge. Bespoke wheels round off the looks of the van.

We do know that the Zeekr 009 was designed in Gothenburg, Volvo's hometown in Sweden, at Geely's new global design center, under the supervision of ex-Bentley design boss Stefan Sielaff. Considering the similarities, we can only assume that the EM90 was designed in parallel.

According to the information provided by China's MIIT, the vehicle is 5,206 millimeters (205 inches) long by 2,024 millimeters (79,7 inches) wide and 1,859 millimeters (73 inches) tall, which makes it bigger than the Mercedes EQV. The electric Mercedes is 5,140 millimeters (202.3 inches) long, 1,928 millimeters (75.9 inches) wide, and 1,901 millimeters (74.8 inches) tall. The EM90 weighs 2,763 kilograms (6,091 pounds), while the Mercedes tips the scales at 2,854 kilograms (6,292 pounds).

What powers the Volvo EM90 van is, at least in the documentation provided to MIIT, a single motor that is mounted on the rear axle in a rear-wheel drive setup. The motor generates 268 horsepower (272 PS). There is no info on the battery pack, but if it gets the one that the Zeekr 009 now has, we are looking at a usable capacity of 140 kWh. The unit would store enough energy for a drive of up to 511 miles (822 kilometers) on a single charge, on China's CLTC testing cycle. We are most likely to see an all-wheel drive showing up in the lineup at a later date.

There will also be a version with a smaller battery in the lineup, with a capacity of 116 kWh battery pack. That one will be good for 436 miles (700 kilometers) of range, according to the CLTP driving cycle.

There is no photo from inside the Volvo EX90, but the carmaker promoted referred to the cabin, calling it a "Scandinavian living room on the move." So we expect the minimalist approach to continue on board in the company of a high-tech ambiance.

We are to find out more about Volvo's first-ever MPV on November 12, when it is set to make its global debut. Pre-orders should begin the same day for the Chinese market, while deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2024.
