Totally unbeknownst to the English speaking journalistic world, Volkswagen made a German-only press statement last week which stated that production of a brand new model called the Sportsvan has already begun in Germany.
It's being put together at the Wolfsburg plant, right in the heart of Volkswagen and next to the regular Golf hatchback. For those of you who don't remember last year's concept shown in Frankfurt, Sportsvan is the name given to the Golf Plus replacement. It's an MPV with short overhangs, a rival to the Citroen C4 Picasso. Compared to the old model, the Sportsvan is 134 mm longer and has 74 more liters of luggage space.
Volkswagen announced that six new engines are available, four TSI turbos and two TDI diesels. All come standard with a start-stop function and comply with EU6 emissions standards. Compared to the Plus, fuel consumption can be as much as 19% lower.
The photo above shows the very first example, a silver Highline top-spec car with a 1.4-liter TSI rated at 150 PS.
