Volkswagen chose the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show to preview the next generation of Golf Plus with a near production-ready concept called the Golf Sportsvan.
We liked it, but wondered why the name change. A report from Autonews Europe tells us why. From an interview with head of engineering for exterior, interior and safety at the VW brand, Christian Strube, they learned that Volkswagen wants to take the Plus in a new direction .
Strube said in most European markets the Plus name will be dropped in favor of the one used by the concept, Golf Sportsvan. He also said that the new MPV is aimed more at younger buyers by offering them extra room. Compared to the old model, the Sportsvan is 134 mm longer and has 74 more liters of luggage space.
However, that luggage space figure is well within the class, so actually VW's move by itself won't attract younger buyers, but it should keep the car competitive.
The Sportsvan should be a nice, reliable and efficient car, even though its name sounds so Americanized.
