The Jetta came out in 1979 as a sedan with Golf underpinnings. Aimed squarely at the American market, the Jetta received the oily bits of the Golf GTI (a.k.a. Rabbit GTI) in 1984. That's four decades ago, which calls for a celebration. Volkswagen paid tribute to the original by means of a special edition, which is capped at 1,984 examples of the breed and exclusive to the US market.
Priced at $28,085 (sans destination freight charge), the newcomer will arrive in dealer showrooms as a 2024 model in late summer 2023. What makes the 40th Anniversary Edition stand out from the standard GLI?

In addition to rarity, black detailing beautifully contrasts with the Grand Luxe Injection's trademark red accents. Hopping inside reveals embossed molecular cloth upholstery for the seats, which is unique from car to car. Volkswagen draws a parallel to the uniqueness of human fingerprints, albeit that's a stretch given the complexity of a fingerprint compared to the pattern of upholstery produced on a budget.

Further still, the cupholders feature GLI and 1984 engravings to bring the point home. Both of the front sills, as well as the seat tags, read GLI 40. The finishing touch comes in the form of a clip at the six o'clock position of the steering wheel. Care to guess which two-digit number is featured?

Pictured on 18-inch black alloys, the Jetta GLI 40th Anniversary Edition comes in three paint colors. The list starts with the Pure Gray of the vehicle in the photo gallery. Alternatively, customers can pick between Pure White and Rising Blue. What else does your hard-earned money buy in addition to the aforementioned?

The advertised MSRP further includes the DCC adaptive damping system, which makes a world of difference in both regular driving scenarios and under spirited cornering. The VAQ electronically-controlled LSD is also included in the advertised price, along with the XDS electronic diff lock.

A sportier exhaust and larger brakes further differentiate the Jetta GLI from the Jetta, whereas the Sport HMI performance monitor is exclusive to the Grand Luxe Injection. Based on the Autobahn trim level, the 40th Anniversary Edition shares the Autobahn's EA888 four-pot engine.

The 2.0-liter turbo develops a respectable 228 horsepower at 5,000 revolutions per minute and 258 pound-feet (350 Nm) at 1,500 revolutions per minute. Step up to the Golf GTI, and the EA888 is much obliged to crank out 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet (370 Nm). A higher tune of the EA888 is used in the Golf R, which makes 315 ponies and 295 pound-feet (400 Nm) of twist.

Currently priced at $31,585 stateside, the Autobahn comes standard with keyless access, push-button start, a power tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof, a wireless charging pad, nine BeatsAudio speakers, and high beam control for the headlights. Of course, said goodies are standard in the special edition as well.
