There will be many new kids on the Volkswagen block in the near future, including the ninth-gen Passat, which will replace the aging B8 in the brand's overseas family, sporting a single body style this time around. If you haven't heard yet, the all-new VW Passat will only be offered as a station wagon or Variant in the company's slang.
We've seen numerous scoops of the car doing its thing these past few months, and Volkswagen themselves stepped forward recently to drop a generous photo gallery of camouflaged prototypes. Therefore, we pretty much know what to expect in terms of styling, naming an ID-like face with a light bar linking the clusters, a large lower grille in the bumper, an evolutionary profile, and taillights believed to be sporting full-width styling.
Besides the new design, VW promises the upcoming Passat will get higher quality materials. Things such as the dashboard panel, steering wheel, and digital dials appear to be similar to those of the Tiguan. The infotainment system will comprise two offerings, with a 15-inch display in the top-of-the-line grades and a 12.9-inch screen in lesser variants. The head-up display will be optional, and it will get massaging and heating functions for the seats and the usual amount of ambient lighting. Due to the larger footprint, it will also be more spacious and capable of hauling more gear in the trunk.
Based on the MQB Evo platform, or rather a stretched version of this construction, the new Passat will be the same car beneath the skin as the next-gen Skoda Superb (this one will be offered in two body styles). Volkswagen says it will launch with gasoline and diesel engines, and mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids will be part of the offering. Adaptive chassis control tech will make it more comfortable, and the steering will be improved. As a result, it should be better in every aspect than its predecessors when it debuts in late August, prior to its launch in the first quarter of 2024.
Now that we've reminded ourselves about this car, it's time to see a few unofficial renderings of it. Made by sugardesign_1, they're on the unrealistic side, bar the face, which seems to be similar to that of the real thing. The profile is sportier, reminding us of the Arteon Shooting Brake, and out back, it doesn't look anything like the prototypes. The pixel manipulator gave it a white finish, different wheels of a larger diameter, and privacy windows before calling it a day, and between us, we wouldn't have hated it if it ended up looking like this. But would you have been ready to kick that crossover out of bed for it if it did?
