Have you ever thought the Volkswagen Amarok isn’t up to snuff as far as styling is concerned? What about luxury and off-road capability? Wonder no more because Carlex Design has something right up your alley.
Despite the name, the tuning project known as Amy is every bit as serious as the Amarok can get. Except for the six-wheeled version under development in Australia, perhaps. On sale in Germany from €13,995 and available exclusively as a conversion package, the Amarok Amy features Nappa leather upholstery, quilting, and perforated leather on the steering wheel.

The luxed-up interior contrasts with the beefed-up exterior, which makes us think Amy has a split personality. Black paint, extended wheel arches on all four corners, BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A rubber, decals on both sides, and a lip for the hood are all standard. Five red accents (on the front bumper and wheel arches) plus two trapezoidal exhaust tips round off the package.

But wait, there’s more! A simple look at the options list reveals how Carlex Design can make the turbo diesel V6 sounds like a V8 by means of a smartphone app and a clever sound generator that works similarly to Audi Active Sound. An LED light bar mounted on the roof, suspension lift kit, off-road side sills, and a full-size spare wheel are also available.

Last, but certainly not least, Carlex Design is much obliged to remind the owner that Amy is a special Amarok by re-programming the infotainment system to show “Amy” on the home screen. In regard to the suck-squeeze-bang-blow side of the deal, there’s no option to take things up a notch from the Poland-based tuner.

Then again, the Amarok V6 TDI doesn’t need more get up and go considering that it makes even the Mercedes-Benz X 350d 4Matic blush. On overboost, the 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo develops 272 PS (268 horsepower) and 580 Nm (428 pound-feet) of torque, which is good enough for a mid-size pickup truck. Heck, not even the 2019 Ford Ranger Raptor can argue with that.
