Dodge has kicked off deliveries of the magnificent Challenger SRT Demon 170, and we all know what that means: exciting drag races and quick off-the-line quarter-mile runs like this one, which was recently put to the test against the clock.
Mind you, it was a brand-new example, too, which came straight from the dealer lot to the drag strip, having only 67 miles (108 km) under its belt when it blasted down the 1/4-mile. Since cars with fewer than 500 miles (805 km) have to make do without launch control, it is certainly worth noting that this feature wasn't available at the time of filming, and neither was the Transbrake 2.0 system.

Owned by Stephen Rippa of Ripatuned, this Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 had ethanol in the tank for the run and no upgrades whatsoever. At the end of the run, it posted 9.39 seconds with an exit speed of 147.73 mph (237.75 kph). In perfect conditions, this model can deal with the quarter-mile in 8.91 seconds, according to the automaker, at 151.17 mph (243.28 kph).

Moreover, on E85, its remastered supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine is more powerful than the one of the original Bugatti Veyron. The unit develops 1,025 hp (1,040 ps/765 kW) and 945 pound-feet (1,281 Nm) of torque, taking a neck-snapping 1.66 seconds to hit 60 mph (97 kph). Thus, on paper, it would annihilate basically every road-legal model out there. Put E10 in the tank, and the output and thrust will drop to 900 hp (913 ps/671 kW) and 810 lb-ft (1,098 Nm).

To come up with those insane numbers, Dodge has basically reengineered the engine, which features an upgraded supercharger with improved boost pressure, a larger diameter throttle body, upgraded valve guides, high-strength connecting rods, new spark plugs, and many others. The powertrain control module was recalibrated, and the automatic transmission with eight gears was upgraded to cope with the added oomph. And we all know that mastering it is tricky, as you'll need perfect conditions if you want to post sub-9-second 1/4-mile runs, as well as a healthy dose of the brave pill.

Part of the Last Call series, which celebrates the end of the line of the Challenger and Charger, the Dodge Demon 170 was unveiled earlier this year and will go down in history as the fastest and most powerful of its kind. What makes it even more impressive is that the car manufacturer has managed to keep it road-legal despite being capable of truly insane straight-line performance numbers. Production is capped at 3,300 units, with 3,000 destined for the US and 300 for Canada, and it had an original MSRP of $96,666. The examples that get listed for grabs tend to be some three times more expensive.
