As per the Chinese calendar, humanity is getting closer and closer to the start of the year of the Dragon. On February 10, we all should start a period filled with opportunities, but also changes and challenges. And what better way to face them all than on the backs of a brand-new Italian scooter?
Vespa has a very long tradition of tying its products to all sorts of events in this world, and that includes the start of new Chinese years. And given the importance of the Dragon for Chinese culture, Vespa was not about to miss a connection.

As such, the Italian scooter-maker, perhaps the most famous in the world, announced at the end of last week the launch of a special edition of the Vespa 946 called Dragon, but also of a matching varsity jacket to make sure the idea has the fullest of impacts.

Now don't go thinking Vespa went above and beyond and significantly modified the scooter. Underneath the special body – we'll discuss that in a bit – people will get the same single-cylinder engine that is 125cc in displacement, the single arm and shock suspension, and the eight-liter (two gallons) fuel tank.

Ever since its introduction in 2013 the 946 was however a canvas for special edition models, and that is why it was chosen for the Dragon as well. To stand out from the previous models, but also from the Bunny edition that was also available at the time of writing, the Dragon received a special and unique golden hue.

The centerpiece of the design is the emerald green dragon that is tattooed on the bike's body, snaking its way from the ride's rear end all the way to its front. Its color makes it unmissable, just like the one that was fitted on the varsity jacket.

Believe it or not, it is this varsity jacket that's actually the highlight of today's Vespa piece of news. That's because special editions of Vespa 946 we've seen before, but clothing items made by the Italians we did not.

The jacket is the Italians' "inaugural fashion item" and it is meant to celebrate "the legendary status of the iconic scooter and reflects its signature combination of style and legacy." It's a ribbed wool piece with nappa leather sleeves and it too features the dragon tattoo. It tops that though with the Vespa monogram and an ancient Chinese proverb.

Vespa will make just 1888 units (the meaning behind the number was not disclosed) of the special scooter and the accompanying jacket. It will be available on the American market as well, starting in March 2024. The pricing for the model on the local market was set at $13,499, while in Canada it will sell from $16,995.
