Built from 1972 through 1982, the Maserati Merak was the first Modena-built sportscar to introduce the quad-cam V6 engine, replacing the larger V8 for better handling and a more affordable price.
Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Merak had up to 220 HP in SS form and featured certain Citroen hydraulic systems, including brakes, clutch, headlight pods and even the SM’s dashboard at first. That was all due to the fact that Maserati was under Citroen ownership until 1975.

Although the Merak is not quite as expensive as the Bora, it can still fetch up to €40,000 ($52,200) if auctioned in tip top shape. However, there’s one certain Maserati Merak that may do better than that: the Saurer “Hot Merak”.

Built in 1975 line any other Merak, the mid-engined sportscar was redesigned nine years later by Swiss motorsport specialists Carrosserie Saurer. Conceived by Paul Saurer with the “ideal Hot Merak” style in mind, the Saurer Merak, a Maserati that could stand out in any classic sportscar lineup, will be auctioned on May 17 at the Silverstone Auctions hosted International Trophy Sale.

This unique vehicle is reportedly well-documented and the next owner will have access to its full history. The Maserati Merak by Saurer is estimated between £35,000 (€40,900 / $53,420) to £40,000 (€46,700 / $61,000).
