Toyota's GR Corolla is returning to the NASA National Championships in 2023, having served as the official pace car of the series last year. The hot hatch will lead the pack at the Pittsburgh International Race Complex in Wampum, Pennsylvania, between September 7 and 10.
Pacing for more than 350 entrants that will compete in 25 classes on the 2.78-mile (4.47-km) long racetrack that features 19 turns, the Toyota GR Corolla pace car is in the Morizo Edition configuration. This trim level sits at the top of the range, and in this case, it sports red, white, and black graphics, said to be "reminiscent of fan-favorite Toyota motorsports and endurance racing liveries."
Toyota has given the GR Corolla a turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine with a 1.6-liter displacement hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission exclusively, which delivers the thrust to the all-wheel drive system. Developed with Toyota's rallying know-how, the AWD allows drivers to select the power distribution between the front and rear wheels, with a choice of 60-40, 50-50, or 30-70. Those sitting behind the wheel can also choose one of the four driving modes available. These are called the Eco, Normal, Sport, and Custom, and they adjust the parameters of the drivetrain.
But how much power does the compact hot hatch, which takes a swing at the likes of the Volkswagen Golf R, have? That would be 300 hp at 6,500 rpm and 273 pound-feet (370 Nm) of torque. The thrust increases to 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) when getting the Morizo Edition. This version tops the 2023 GR Corolla family, sitting above the Core and Circuit Edition grades, bringing shorter gearing, a more rigid chassis setup, and weighing 100 pounds (45 kg) less than the Circuit Edition model via the removal of the rear seat and other components.
Toyota says the GR Corolla Morizo Edition takes 4.92 seconds from zero to 60 mph (97 kph), whereas the other two derivatives can deal with the sprint in 4.99 seconds. All three have a top speed electronically limited to 143 mph (230 kph). Besides the car, Toyota also offers a complimentary track day and a one-year NASA membership to anyone who buys a new GR Corolla.
Price-wise, you are looking at a minimum of $35,900 for the 2023 GR Corolla Core. The mid-spec 2023 GR Corolla Circuit Edition starts at $42,900, and for the top-of-the-line Morizo Edition, interested parties will have to cough out at least $49,900. These are all base prices that exclude the destination charge, as well as options and dealer fees. The rivaling VW Golf R, which has a 315-horsepower 2.0-liter four-pot and a six-speed stick shift, kicks off at $44,740 stateside, or $45,390 when it comes to the better-equipped 20th Anniversary Edition.
