Hold on to your American horses for a little more while, and don't rush into dealerships. These limited editions are dedicated to the Japanese market - and most likely mimic the atmosphere of the GR86 Trueno and BRZ tS.
At home in Japan, Toyota and Subaru have both allowed Toyota Gazoo Racing to take care of the introduction of their latest sporty rides – the Toyota GR86 RZ "40th Anniversary Limited" and Subaru BRZ STI Sport. It's a little hard to read through all the clutter on the Japanese portal – we can't find any press releases from Toyota or Subaru on the matter – but as far as we can tell, the latter mimics the BRZ tS for the United States.
As for the GR86 RZ "Since 1983 40th Anniversary Limited" edition, if you want the entire moniker, things look a bit better because we found the dedicated online portal. Well, the good news stops there, as only 200 examples of the RZ grade-based "40th Anniversary Limited" will be offered to interested customers. Toyota is also trying to quench any potential influences, so all sales of the special edition will be limited to a lottery raffle.
Applications will be accepted across Japan's GR Garage stores at a nationwide level, starting from September 25 through October 9. Naturally, this new variant is a tribute to the Toyota AE86, as the rear-wheel-drive sports coupe is unanimously seen as its spiritual successor in the company's current model range. It will be available with both manual or auto transmissions, and this retro-inspired special edition gets an assortment of mods inside and out.
On the outside, the model based on the RZ trim gets a Crystal White Pearl or Spark Red body color, dealer-installed 40th-anniversary side decals, and a GR trunk spoiler. On the inside, there's a new special interior color mixing black and red, while the 40th Anniversary GR floor mats are, again, a dealer-installed option. Pricing kicks off at 3,822,000 yen ($25,773) for the six-speed manual version and 3,920,000 yen ($26,432) for the six-speed auto.
However, keep in mind that both unique colors are optional – 55k yen ($371) for Spark Red, 33k yen ($223) for Crystal White Pearl, while the 40th Anniversary side decal and the GR trunk spoiler are 24,200 yen and 35,200 yen ($163 and $237), respectively. As always, everything costs these days. Anyway, in related news, Toyota just presented the 2024 model year for the best-selling RAV4 crossover while we're waiting on pricing info about the GR86 Trueno Edition and Subaru's BRZ tS, costing $200 more than the outgoing 2023MY.
And, of course, we are eagerly waiting to see what the Japanese automaker has in store for the rest of the year – until now, they were quite like a tidal wave with their novelties, considering the 2024 Grand Highlander, Corolla Nightshade, N400 Tacoma, or 2024 Land Cruiser superstars.
