From a petrolhead’s point of view, there are four stepping stones until you get your driver’s license. The stroller, the pedal car, the bicycle and the go-kart are those stepping stones. From Toyota’s point of view, a petrolheads’ first years can be more interesting than taking the beaten path.
Cue the Toyota Camatte Hajime. It loosely resembles a three-seater version of the Lunar Rover Vehicle from the Apollo space program, doesn’t it? Thank the lord this one doesn’t have the moon buggy’s dull mesh dish antenna. So, is the Camatte Hajime a plaything or a motor vehicle?
A little bit of both is the right answer. Though the Japanese manufacturer doesn't detail how much kW the electric motor produces, the 3.02-meter long, 1.32-meter wide and 1.24-meter high Camatte Hajime is “a real working car.” To debut at the Tokyo Toy Show later this week, the Camatte Hajime will be on display to explore hands-on.
If you’re interested in going there and go for a spin in the Hajime, bad luck. The vehicle won’t be drivable then for rather obvious reasons. Nevertheless, you can get your kiddo in the driver’s seat and let his imagination take over.
As a bonus, kids will be happy to know that there will be other Camattes on display, with the addition of a rather neat augmented reality application. The Camatte Vision interactive experience works by:
- Hoping into the Camatte Hajime to take a photo of you and your family;
- Grab one of the tablets available, and customize a car by mixing and matching 13 body types and 12 colors;
- Take your tablet to the model driving course and hold it over the road. Your customized car will appear on the course with you and your family inside!
