Hunting for Hot Wheels cars in stores has started losing appeal to me. The number of scalpers has grown significantly, and there's no such thing as common sense anymore. For the past few months, I've missed out on several new releases due to this trend, and I'm not going to encourage it by buying the collectibles I want for three to five times their regular price.
In part one of this Hot Wheels Super Treasure Hunt story, I tried to remind you how the world felt in 2009. And today, I will give you more interesting facts about that year. Jim Mero set a fast lap of 7:19.63 in the Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1, which was about 2.5 seconds faster than what Tom Coronel had achieved in the Dodge Viper ACR in 2008.

Nissan gave the GT-R its first update since launching in 2007. Jenson Button won the Formula One World Championship for the only time in his career, driving the famous Brawn BGP 001. Valentino Rossi won his seventh and final MotoGP World Championship.

Last but not least, the world saw James Cameron's $237 million "Avatar" in theaters worldwide. And Hot Wheels was then celebrating its 41st anniversary. We opened up part one with the first six Super Treasure Hunt models of the year, only to discover Ford had the upper hand. But the balance of power shifted to General Motors and Chevrolet for the year's second half.

A word of advice before you start randomly purchasing the 2009 STH collection. Instead of picking the 12 items out individually, focus on finding the Red Line Club exclusive set from that year. This way, you will have the STH and TH items in one shot for about $500. That makes for an average price of just under $21 per Hot Wheels car, which is decent enough for a 14-year-old set of rare vehicles.

Custom ’53 Chevy

The 2009 Super Treasure Hunt collectibles have several things in common: Real Riders wheels and the fact that Larry Wood designed all the original castings. The Custom '53 Chevy debuted in 2007, featuring a simple red and white finish and 5-spoke wheels. Mattel has released 22 variations of this casting, with the most recent one coming out in 2022.

Rumors have it that the next iteration will arrive in 2024 as part of the regular Treasure Hunt series, but more on that when it is due. In all these years, the Custom '53 Chevy has only had Real Riders wheels once, and that's the model we're talking about today. The 2009 STH featured a Spectraflame Purple finish, with white flames running down the car's sides.

The White Wall Deep Dish Real Riders wheels completed the look, differentiating this collectible from the TH model. It's not the most amazing STH Mattel has ever created, but it's alright. Consequently, prices on the open market vary from $30 to $60, and you can get both cars for $80 or less if you want to have them side by side.

Bone Shaker

The Bone Shaker casting arrived just one year earlier than the 'Custom 53 Chevy but has had infinitely more success. Picture this: Mattel released ten different variations in 2006 alone! And three were limited-edition models, with 3,000, 1,500, and 500 units produced for each design. 2007 started with a Toy Fair Bone Shaker and continued with a Red Line Club sELECTIONs model and a Collector Convention edition later.

There are 100 variations of this casting to collect without considering the Closed Roof models! It's challenging, as several models sell for over $100 each on eBay. Someone is asking as much as $250 for the 2009 Super Treasure Hunt Bone Shaker, but you can still hope to find one for $50 or less. And if you'd like more exciting information, this casting has reached STH status three times during its lifespan! Only a few other Hot Wheels models have achieved that performance before.

’49 Merc

The '49 Merc is the second convertible vehicle of the 2009 STH series. It debuted in the 2004 Auto Affinity: Kool & Kustom collection, featuring a Metalflake Orange finish and 5-spoke Mag-Style Real Riders wheels. That same year, collectors could have bought a special Larry Wood World Tour 4-Car Set variation in Spectraflame Blue.

If you're into the design, you can still pick one up for about $100. Mattel built 27 variations of the '49 Merc, most coming out between 2004 and 2009. The one we're interested in now has a Spectraflame Brown finish and White Wall Real Riders wheels. It looked a lot better than its regular TH counterpart, and it's also quite affordable, with prices going as low as $20.

’55 Chevy

The '55 Chevy was next, and this casting first launched in 2006. At the time, it had a Spectraflame Yellow and White paint job and 7-spoke rims, something you don't see too often. Since the beginning, we have seen 26 variations of this casting, and it has reached Super Treasure Hunt status twice. The first one had a Spectraflame Magenta paint job and classic White Wall Real Riders wheels.

The newer version is often considerably more expensive, with prices as high as $300 per unit. By comparison, the 2009 STH will only cost $80 or less. Strangely, Mattel has yet to release a new variation in 2023, but with a collectible this popular, that's bound to change in 2024. I don't think we will see a Premium '55 Chevy soon, though, as in recent times, people are more eager to get European and Japanese cars instead.

GMC Motorhome

This tiny replica of a GMC Motorhome has been a thing since 1977. Even so, it's only the second oldest casting in the 2009 Super Treasure Hunt series, but I'll get to that in a minute. Larry Wood worked with Bob Rosas to design this casting for its Flying Colors debut. Mattel released eight variations until 1983, putting everything on hold for almost 14 years beyond that.

The start of the 21st century was good for the GMC Motorhome, as there were several Limited Edition iterations. The 2009 Super Treasure Hunt was almost identical to the regular TH, except for the Real Riders wheels. Some sellers have gone as far as listing these items for over $100, but a fair price is more in the $50 range.

The GMC Motorhome is my favorite 2009 STH collectible, as it's different from everything else: you can't help but love a six-wheeler! Too bad Mattel has seemingly given up on this casting, as no new iteration has come out of El Segundo for over half a decade now.

Neet Streeter

The Neet Streeter precedes the GMC Motorhome, as it made its Hot Wheels debut in 1976. It's no longer around, but there are dozens of variations to collect if you like the design. Despite the name, you can quickly tell this is a 1930s Ford vehicle. The re-tooled Neet Streeter arrived in 1995 as part of a FAO Schwarz collection: The History of Hot Wheels.

With some luck, you can buy the whole package for $60 or less. I wouldn't say that the 2009 Super Treasure Hunt Neet Streeter is the best version of the casting out there, but it's certainly a lot better than all the mainline iterations. It featured a Spectraflame Olive Green finish, and 5-Spoke Mag-Style Real Riders wheels, but the best part is that it still had a metal base.

Prices vary between $30 and $70, but I suggest you look for the complete TH and STH set instead. Given the choice, I'd opt for the 2015 HW Heritage model, which had mismatched wheels front and back. Please beware of the older/error cars that can cost as much as $4,000; at that price, I'd suggest you buy a 1:1 car you can use in real life. Thank me later!
