Luka Doncic isn’t the first NBA star to match his signature sneakers with his ride, but he might just be the greatest. The Mavs guard led the league in scoring this season, averaging 33.9 points per game, to go with 9.8 assists per game and 9.2 rebounds per game. That’s a near triple-double.
I know the MVP trophy has to go to Nikola Jokic again. He’s been incredible and his team is easily the best in the league right now. However, Luka should be a close second to Jokic. One could argue that he’s even more valuable to the Mavs than Jokic is to the Nuggets, but you can’t argue with the latter’s sustained excellence over the course of an entire season.

Anyway, Doncic and his creative team at Jordan brand came up with a fun way to promote his latest signature sneaker, the Luka 3. They thought: “Why don’t we wrap your 1968 Chevy Camaro restomod to look like the Midnight Racer edition of the Luka 3?”

A good idea? Sure, why not. Although not so much an original one. NBA players have been wrapping their rides in custom liveries for a while now, and just last year we saw LaMelo Ball customize his 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 to look like his Puma MB.01 shoes.

Personally, I think the wrap on Luka’s Camaro is a lot nicer than what LaMelo did to his Hummer EV. I love the purple and pink accents, blending wonderfully together with the black surfaces and mint lettering. His jersey number (77), his brand logo and the Jordan logo are all displayed in mint (light green) over black on the sides of the car.

As for where they got the idea for this Midnight Racer colorway, apparently it was from Luka’s late-night drives home after games.

“For Luka, late-night drives are a sanctuary and a time for introspection,” said the Jordan brand in an official release. “Emblematic of those late nights, this colorway features swirls of pink and purple plus a pop of mint.”

Meanwhile, part of the shoe’s design is inspired by a tire decelerating and accelerating at top speeds – Luka is known for his ability to stop on a dime and fake out defenders, or step back quickly for a three. The Jordan brand made it a point to say that the Luka 3s were “tuned for creating maximum separation from defenders.”

Back to his car - Doncic drove his freshly wrapped Camaro to the American Airlines Center yesterday to face the LA Clippers in Game 3 of the series. In fact, he debuted his Midnight Racer Luka 3s in the game, and while he didn’t have an amazing scoring night by his standards (finishing with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists), his team still won the game, taking a 2-1 lead in the series.

The Mavs and Clippers will play again in Dallas on Sunday afternoon, before heading back to Los Angeles for Game 5. By the way, if you’re wondering which team is more likely to win the series, at this point we can safely say that it’s the Mavericks. Kawhi Leonard is injured and can barely move, and the Clippers are imploding – Westbrook's antics certainly aren’t helping.

Luka’s other rides

I know the ‘68 Camaro is nice, and by the way, it used to be metallic blue before Luka had it wrapped. However, the Mavs star owns a bunch of other impressive rides, like his Apocalypse Hellfire 6x6 truck or his Mansory-tuned Lamborghini Urus. Let’s run through each separately.

The Hellfire 6x6 is a gigantic six-wheeler that looks like it could withstand an apocalypse (no pun intended). It’s based on the Jeep Gladiator, but more evolved – it's over 20 feet long and 6.75 feet tall. We’re not sure why Doncic likes it so much, but it probably has a lot to do with how outlandish it is. Can you imagine if he had this thing wrapped in Midnight Racer, instead of the Camaro? That would have been hilarious.

In terms of performance, the Hellfire 6x6 is powered by an LS3 V8 engine, good for 500 horsepower. It’s not insanely fast, but it should still be fun (or at least interesting) to drive.

As for his Lamborghini Urus, he’s had that for a while now, vacationing alongside it in Croatia back in 2022. This high-performance SUV has been fitted with Mansory’s so-called ‘Venatus’ body kit, featuring exposed carbon fiber bits, black wheels, flared arches, custom badging, a new apron, new hood, custom diffuser (with three tailpipes), plus a super aggressive-looking front bumper.

I think this car is basically what the Batmobile would look like in SUV form. That’s not a bad idea, seeing as how Bruce Wayne often works with team members such as Batgirl and a whole bunch of Robins. Anyway, it’s a good thing Luka didn’t wrap this thing in Midnight Racer either. The ‘68 Camaro was clearly the right choice.
