The Blue Oval is just about ready to wrap up the lifecycle of the current Ford Shelby Mustang GT350/GT350R, and if you’re in the market for one, better hurry to catch an allocation slot. Alternatively, if money is no object of concern, there’s also this very original 1965 Shelby American GT350 Fastback that’s almost ready to hit the auction block during the early days of 2021.
Sure, resetting your mind from a thoroughly modern Voodoo-sporting Shelby GT350 (which kicks off at a MSRP of $60,440) to an original, first-generation Shelby GT350 is quite a big step. Especially when checking out the pictures from the attached gallery and noticing the close resemblance to the white/blue stripes unit that earlier this summer became the most expensive Mustang ever.

But, if there’s any consolation, the listing does come with a “No Reserve” status attached to this Wimbledon White with Blue striping example that was initially designated as an “Advanced Prototype” back when it was completed on January 25, 1965.

Also, SFM5013 is of the standard GT350 variety and not part of the glorious GT350R stable. It does come with full Caroll Shelby panache, as the Mustang served as a PR vehicle for Shelby American and even appeared in early promotional work. It was later sold to Hi-Performance Motors from Los Angeles in May 1965 and quickly left the lot the same month for the driveway of one John Christy, the original owner.

Back then, he was the editor of Sports Car Graphic Magazine, and according to the description, he fell in love with the Shelby after completing a huge, 10k mile road test with SFM5007. The car that was sold to him on May 24th, 1965, was driven sparingly throughout its lifetime by all of its owners – and it landed in the possession of the current one since 1989.

It covered just 6,950 miles (11,185 km) during its lifetime and was always closely guarded and maintained to utmost original condition. Mecum notes the legendary Shelby American designer Peter Brock described it as “probably the only example extant today that remains virtually untouched.”
