Three Mercedes EQG prototypes put on quite a show on Las Vegas Boulevard, in front of Planet Hollywood, not far from the Bellagio Hotel. The three of them were in the city to participate in this year's Consumer Electronics Show.
If you want everyone talking about it, you have to do it where everyone can see it. And Las Vegas Boulevard sounds like the perfect place to get people talking about it.

Mercedes must have thought the same thing when it took three EQGs to the main boulevard of Vegas, stopped traffic in front of Planet Hollywood, and filmed the off-roaders doing the spectacular tank turn in the middle of the street. The EGQ is on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 at the Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Several videos uploaded on former Twitter/current X shows the three of them wearing the black and blue camouflage and ‘dancing’ in the street. A voice through the radio comm does the countdown from 3 to 1 in German, and then the vehicles start doing the tank turn. They spin three times before the drivers hit the brake pedal.

The move is possible because the upcoming EQG, the first electric G-Class, will be powered by a quad-motor powertrain. Each of the motors operates a wheel and spins it independently.

All the driver has to do is push a button and then control the move with the help of the shift paddles located behind the steering wheel, on the steering column, depending on the direction they want to go.

Mercedes equips the EQG with this function to make the vehicle spin out of a predicament when it gets stuck on rough terrain. But there is a risk drivers will do it just to show off, like these drivers did in Las Vegas. The difference is that the respective sector of Las Vegas Boulevard was closed for the stunt.

Drivers showing off is the reason Rivian gave up equipping the R1S SUV with the tank turn function despite advertising it all throughout the development stage. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe explained that drivers might abuse the feature and decided to keep it out of production for the moment.

Before the electric G-Class hits the road, the only cars in production that are capable of doing the tank turn are coming all the way from China. One of them is the Zeekr 001 shooting brake, which also entered the European market last summer, while the other one is the YangWang U8.

The latter is an SUV that is capable of tank-turning both on land and in water. The U8 also features an emergency float mode that prevents sinking for 30 minutes from the moment the SUV goes into the water.
