In the world of old school Jags, most gearheads can be classified as either E-Type or C and D-Type fans. There’s nothing wrong with Jaguar’s Big Three from our point of view, but the Mark 2 is very underrated.
Manufactured between 1959 and 1967 as the MK 2, the medium-sized saloon car lived on until 1969 as the Jaguar 240 and 340. If you exclude the Daimler 250’s V8 from the equation, this Leaping Cat was only offered with 3.4 and 3.8-liter Jaguar XK6 mills.
Some 90,000 and a few hundred examples were ever produced. Compared to the E-Type Series I FHC and OTS, that’s three times as many MK 2s than XK-Es. So the Mark 2 isn’t a rare breed, but you know what? This big cat is Sir William Lyons’ unsung masterpiece and the car that inspired BMW and Mercedes to start making performance sedans. Yup, it predates the original BMW M5 and 1968 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3.
With 220 horsepower from the 3.8-liter lump of this particular example of the breed, the Jaguar Mark 2 is able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 8.5 seconds. Needless to say this, but that era’s BMW 3200 CS and its BMW OHV V8 engine were far behind the MK2 in terms of get-up-and-go.
Furthermore, this 1966 Jaguar MK 2 has original wire wheels and shows a genuine 38,037 miles (61,214 kilometers). What that translates to is circa 776 miles (1,249 km) driven per year for 49 years. Being a 3.8-liter model, this Opalescent Blue Jaguar Mark 2’s rear end is kept in check by a limited-slip differential.
If you’re interested in this particular old-timer, CCA will offer it at auction later this April for an estimated sale price not far from £25,000, equating to €34,505 or $36,560. Now that's what we call a bargain.
