When Tesla published the Cybertruck's specifications, one thing attracted unwanted attention: the alien pickup truck didn't have space for a spare tire. If you want one, Tesla sells one with a strap to secure it in the bed, but in this case, the cargo capacity is affected. It sounds bizarre, but the Cybertruck's design is to blame for this shortcoming.
The Tesla Cybertruck continues to be as polarizing as it always was, almost two months after the first trucks were delivered to their owners. Much has been written about the lack of a spare tire or the limited range, not to mention the battery range extender that takes up one-third of the bed's space. If you combine the two, you end up with no cargo space at all, which makes the Cybertruck a bizarre choice for a pickup truck.

People were puzzled as to why a smaller truck, like the Rivian R1T, still had room for a full-size spare tire under the bed's floor, while Tesla couldn't offer it on the Cybertruck. Rivian's pickup truck is very cleverly packaged, with many cargo spaces in the bed and under it, as well as in the Gear Tunnel between the cabin and the bed. It also offers more space in the frunk than the Cybertruck, making it more useful for hauling things or family trips. Meanwhile, the Cybertruck only has the original design and some crazy-cool technologies that may not be of any interest to a truck buyer.

In the development phase, the Cybertruck was rumored to have some creative storage spaces, including a sail pillar storage. This didn't make it into production, though, as Tesla used much of the space around the truck's bed for different components, including the four-wheel steering system. On the other hand, the enclosed space under the bed's floor (called Gear Locker) hasn't disappeared, but its size is too small for larger objects, including a spare tire.

That's why the Cybertruck is not delivered with a spare tire. Some may argue that this is not even necessary, but people who use a truck for anything other than grocery shopping beg to differ. If you really want a spare tire, Tesla proposes a 'Cybertruck Spare Tire + Tool Kit' in the Shop. For $1,250, you get a Cyber Wheel wrapped in a Goodyear 20" AT tire, a tire cover with a strap, and a tool kit including a hydraulic jack, a hex tool, and a pair of gloves. It's all very cool until you see how much is left of the Cybertruck's bed after you secure the tire.

If you wonder why Tesla could not provide enough space for a spare tire under the bed's floor, well, it's for the same reason why the sail pillar storage disappeared. The Cybertruck is simply too complex, and Tesla filled all the available space with various components. In this case, there's not much space left under the floor because Tesla installed the compressed air tank, the compressor, and other elements of the so-called "scuba pack" that ensure battery pressurization in the Wade Mode.

I wouldn't rule out Tesla optimizing these components and freeing up space for a spare tire in the future. After all, it did so with the heat pump components, which were eventually replaced by the very compact "octovalve." The Cybertruck is a test bed for new technologies, and many components need optimization before they can reach their full potential.
